Cataract Surgery

What To Expect:

Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, at a state-of-the-art same day surgical center. The procedure is performed with only minimal anesthesia, to allow for minimal health risks and rapid recovery. The "no-stitch", topical anesthesia technique gives rapid visual recovery and minimal post-operative restrictions. Most patients return to their routine daily activities, including driving, within one or two days. The surgical procedure is virtually painless, and takes less than TEN MINUTES!

Preprocedure:

Pre-operatively, Dr. Van Inwegen will perform a thorough eye examination, and measure your eyes for the surgical procedure. You must visit your medical doctor for a complete physical exam prior to surgery, to ensure you are in good health to have surgery. On the morning of surgery, you may have some fluids like water, or a cup of coffee or tea; but NO BREAKFAST. You should take all of your normal morning medications.

Since you will receive light anesthesia, you must have someone drive you to and from the surgical procedure. Only you as the patient are permitted to enter the surgical center. Your driver must wait outside, and will be called when you are ready to be picked up. Expect to be in the surgical center for a total of two to three hours.

Postprocedure:

After the procedure, you may return to all of your normal routine activities, including driving, showering, reading and using your eyes. You must use medicated eye drops in the eye several times a day, for several weeks to help the eye to heal and to prevent infection. For ONE WEEK after the procedure, we ask you to refrain from strenuous activities (heavy lifting or exercise),or bending with your head below your waist. Our physicians will examine you at regular intervals as your eyes are healing.
